What if God talked out loud? Would we listen better? Would
we behave better if God called us out in clear and audible
language? Would we spend more time praying if we could
hear distinct answers?
God doesn’t usually talk out loud, but God does try to whisper
answers into our hearts or speak to us through the Bible, or
answer us through the voices of others. God’s Spirit moves
around us and within us trying to communicate with us all the
time.
In his book, “If God Talked Out Loud…,” Clyde Lee Herring
shares some imagined conversations between a teenager and
God to remind us that God is listening to us and trying to
answer us, if we’ll just listen. Imagine a normal conversation
between you and Jesus. Would it be serious all the time? Do
you think God has a sense of humor? Does God care about
the little details in your life? How would God respond to your
deepest doubts and your honest feelings?
During the month of July, we’ll be listening-in and then
reflecting upon some conversations between “God” and one
of His followers in dialogue sermons. Come hear “God”
respond to The Lord’s Prayer and to questions or statements
like, “Lord, I Don’t I Feel You When I Pray,” “Why Do I Need to
Go to Church?” and “Lord, Please Show Me Your Will,” or “Oh
God, I Am So Tired!” Most of us have said these words, but
have you ever heard God’s response to them?Reading this book (and listening to sermons
like this) encouraged me to enter into much
more honest conversations with God,
conversations in which I often imagined and
sometimes even “heard” answers and
responses from God that were more personal
and relational. If you and Jesus sat down and
talked every day, imagine what a great
friendship you would develop!
I look forward to listening for God’s responses
with you. – Barb
