Happy birthday, FUMC! Congratulations on 179 years of loving and
serving Jesus Christ! Just think of all the men, women, and children
who have worshipped in your sanctuaries (multiple buildings!) and
learned about the Bible in your Sunday School rooms. Imagine how
many meals have been prayed over and life stages blessed at
baptisms, weddings, and funerals shared over the years!
On Sunday, May 19, 2024 starting at 11 am, we’ll celebrate
together with inspiring worship, a delicious barbecue lunch, a
festive birthday cake, and bouncy inflatables for the children. The
Reverend Ed Biggers (pastor from 1989 to 1993) will return to
preach for us and we’ll all share stories of the countless ways we
have been blessed by this church. Bring your pictures to share on
our “Table of Memories” set up in the fellowship hall!
Sunday, May 19, the Day of Pentecost, is also the 1,991th birthday
of the entire Christian church!* The Christian church was “born” 50
days after Jesus’ resurrection when the Holy Spirit rushed like a
mighty wind into the Upper Room where the disciples were hiding.
“Tongues of fire” alighted upon each disciples’ head and they were
filled with the Holy Spirit.
Enthused by the Spirit, the disciples left their hiding place and went
out into the streets and spoke boldly about Jesus’ life, death, and
resurrection. Peter’s street preaching was so effective that 3,000
people were baptized and added to their numbers. From that day
on “they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and
fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42)
