“Best of all, God is with us” John Wesley
Well, we are at the beginning of another school year.
Everyone is back in their classrooms, adults have gone
back to regular work, the temperatures are getting
cooler (hopefully), and programs, sports, scouts,
music, etc. are picking back up. A sense of normalcy
(or a new normalcy) is going to enter our lives in this
season. When I was in seminary, one of my favorite
things was learning a new routine. What time did I
need to leave my apartment to get to my 8:30 am
class? Where would my work at the church weave
into my school work? When would I take time for my
mind, body, and soul? A new school year gives us the
chance to start anew, because let’s be honest, our
New Year’s resolutions probably haven’t stuck with
us, and maybe we’re itching for a new routine of
selfcare, faith formation, or even opportunities to be
in community.
This month, I will be working with some church
leaders to begin opportunities for small group
formation. Sunday morning worship is a crucial part
of who we are as Christians, but many Christians also
gathered in homes, and in small groups to cultivate
community and accountability for Christian life. Read
the book of Acts, and you’ll quickly see these
communities being formed. If you’re interested in
forming a small group, let me know.
No matter what type of routine we attempt to create
in this new school year, let us be reminded that God is
always present with us in our schooling, our work, our
fun, our formation, our whole life. May this new
school year, work year, and year of life be one that
recognizes God’s presence with us and encourages us
to enter new routines that help us grow in body,
mind, and soul. – Pastor Emily
